English: of uncertain origin. It is argued by Redmonds that this surname may have developed as a variant of Stringfellow, through a process, attested in various parish records, in which the original name is first shortened and then expanded into a form different from the original; thus Stringfellow becomes Stringfell, which becomes reinterpreted as Stringfield.
