Meaning & History

(female) From the word for the fossilized resin amber, a word derived via Old French and Latin from Arabic ambar. This was first used as a given name at the end of the 19th century. It enjoyed a surge in popularity following the publication of Kathleen Winsor's novel Forever Amber in 1944, and again in the 1990s.
