Modern coinage, most common in North America. It is of unknown origin, probably a fanciful coinage based on Marlene or Charlene, or both. It became famous in the 1950s as the name of the American actress and beauty columnist Arlene Dahl (b. 1924).
German (Schüle): 1. occupational name for a maker or repairer of shoes, from a diminutive of Middle High German schuoch ‘shoe’ (see Schuh). 2. variant of Schiele‘cross-eyed’, altered by folk etymology in such a way that it conforms to the German word Schule ‘school’.
