Mainly U.S.: transferred use of the surname, in origin a local name from any of the numerous places in England so called from Old English brād ‘broad’ + ford ‘ford’. The surname was borne most famously by William Bradford (1590–1657), leader of the Pilgrim Fathers from 1621 and governor of Plymouth Colony for some 30 years. It was also the name of another William Bradford (1722–91), a printer who played an important part in the American Revolution.
