Meaning & Origins
Anglicized form of the Gaelic names Ca(i)trìona (Scottish) and Caitríona (Irish), which are themselves forms of Katherine. As the accents show, it is stressed on the second i. The name is now also used elsewhere in the English-speaking world, although it is still especially popular among people of Scottish ancestry. It attracted wider attention as the title of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Catriona (1893), sequel to Kidnapped.
