French and English: occupational name for a buyer and seller of goods, from Old French, Middle English march(e)ant, Late Latin mercatans, from Latin mercari ‘to trade’, from merx ‘commerce’, ‘exchange’, ‘merchandise’. In the Middle Ages the term was used mainly to denote a wholesale dealer.
