Scottish: variant of Sanger2. The Old English ending -ster was originally a feminine agent suffix, contrasted with the masculine -er, but by the period of surname formation, the gender distinction had disappeared; the distinction is largely regional. Compare Baker/Baxter; Webber/Webster, etc.
