Northern English: topographic name for someone who lived in a rough hut or shed, northern Middle English scale ‘hut’ (from Old Norse skáli), later also sc(h)ole, or a habitational name from one of the various places named with this word, as for example Scales in Lancashire and Cumbria. The surname has been established in southern Ireland since the 14th century.
