1. Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, and Italian: nickname from porro ‘leek’, ‘allium’. In Spanish and Portuguese it denoted a stupid, coarse individual. In Italian, however, the term also means ‘wart’ and the nickname probably denoted someone with warts or boils.
