Muslim (widespread throughout the Muslim world): from the Arabic personal name ῾Abd al-῾Azīz ‘servant of the mighty’ or ‘servant of the beloved’. Al-῾Azīz ‘the Invincible’ or ‘the Beloved’ is an attribute of Allah. Al-῾Azīz (955–996) was the fifth Fatimid khalif of Egypt (975–996), noted among other things for his religious tolerance.
