English (of Norman origin): habitational name from any of the various places in Normandy, France, called Crèvecoeur (‘heartbreak’), from Old French creve(r) ‘to break or destroy’, ‘to die’ + ceur ‘heart’, a reference to the infertility and unproductiveness of the land.
