FOREBEARS The explorer Jacques Cartier (born in St. Malo; 1491?–1557) arrived at the site of modern Quebec in the winter of 1535–36. Hoping to get to China, he got upriver of Montreal, where he was stopped by the rapids, which he named ‘Lachine’ (‘China’).
