1. Indian (northern states): Hindu, Jain, and Parsi name found among several mercantile communities, from seṭh ‘merchant’, ‘banker’ in Hindi and neighboring languages (from Sanskrit šreṣṭhī, a term denoting the head of a mercantile or other guild). The Khatris of the Panjab have a clan called Seth.
