Shelstad

Probably an Americanized form of Norwegian Skjelstad, a habitational name from any of six farmsteads so named. The first element is probably a river name or a personal name (for example, Old Norse Skjalgr); the second element is from Old Norse staðir ‘farmstead’, ‘dwelling’.
