1. Chinese 涂: from the name of the Tu river, a tributary of the Yangtze.

2. Chinese 屠: from one of the characters in the name of the ancient city of Zoutu. The legendary emperor Huang Di (2697–2595 BC) used this city as a military base. Both characters of the city name, Zou (see Zou) and Tu, were adopted as surnames.
