(female), (male) Transferred use of the surname, originally a Norman baronial name from any of various places in northern France called Courtenay, the original meaning of which is ‘domain of Curtius’. However, from an early period it was wrongly taken as a nickname derived from Old French court nez ‘short nose’. In the U.K. it is found chiefly as a girl's name.
