Samnang

Meaning & History

Samnang
Som

Indian (Bengal and southern states) and Bangladeshi: Hindu name from Sanskrit soma ‘moon’. It is usually a Kayasth name in Bengal. It is a variant of Soman among people from Kerala and Tamil Nadi who have migrated from their home state. It is only a given name in southern India, but has come to be used as a family name in the U.S. by families from southern India.

Cambodian: unexplained.

Hungarian: probably a nickname for someone with a sour disposition, from som, a sour-tasting forest fruit.
