Meaning & Origins
Of uncertain origin. Its first known occurrence is in a poem by Thomas Gray (1716–71), recording the death of Horace Walpole's cat Selima, ‘drowned in a tub of gold fishes’. The metre shows that the name was stressed on the first syllable, but there is no clue as to its derivation. Gray (or Walpole) was possibly influenced by the Arabic name Selim ‘peace’.
