English: metonymic occupational name for a cutler, from Old French hansard, hansart ‘cutlass’, ‘dagger’ (of Germanic origin, composed of elements meaning ‘hand’ and ‘knife’ (see Sachs)).

FOREBEARS This is the name of a family who have held land in Surrey and Sussex since the late 12th century. It has come to denote the official verbatim report of British parliamentary proceedings, first printed by Luke Hansard (1752–1828), who had left Norwich for London with one guinea in his pocket and a training as a journeyman printer. He himself believed (probably wrongly) that his surname came from German Hanse (Old High German hansa ‘company’, ‘band’), as in the Hanseatic League, and that it was acquired by his ancestors through a connection with the East Anglian wool trade.
