This seems to have been imported from Wales, but probably derives ultimately from Caunton in Nottinghamshire, which is named with the Old English personal name Calunōð (composed of the elements calu ‘bald’ + nōð ‘daring’) + Old English tūn ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’.
