Southern Italian: 1. from a variant of the personal name Salvio (see Salvi). 2. habitational name from Savoia de Lucania in Potenza, earlier called Salvia. 3. from salvia ‘sage’, presumably a metonymic occupational name for a herbalist or a grower or seller of herbs, or possibly a topographic name.
