FOREBEARS A John Choate who emigrated from England in 1643 and settled in Ipswich, MA, was the ancestor of several prominent 19th century Choates, including Rufus Choate (1799–1859), who was one of the organizers of the Whig Party in MA, and Joseph Hodges Choate (1832–1917), U.S. ambassador to Great Britain.
