(male) Transferred use of the surname, in origin an occupational name for a bowman (Old French arch(i)er, from Latin arc(u)arius, a derivative of arcus ‘bow’). In Australia it may sometimes have been chosen as a given name in tribute to the seven Archer brothers (Charles, John, David, William, Archibald, Thomas, and Colin) who were well-known pastoralists and explorers in 19th-century Queensland.
