(male) English form of the Latin name Augustinus (a derivative of Augustus). Its most famous bearer is St Augustine of Hippo (354430), perhaps the greatest of the Fathers of the Christian Church. He formulated the principles followed by the numerous medieval communities named after him as Austin canons, friars, and nuns.
