According to Norse mythology, this was the name of a son of Odin by his wife Frigg, and in some stories Balder was the god of light. His mother persuaded everything in the world to swear an oath not to harm him, but she overlooked the mistletoe. The evil and cunning god Loki persuaded the blind god Hoder to aim a dart made of mistletoe at Balder, and it killed him. He is sometimes taken as a personification of doomed purity and beauty.
