Brigham

(male) Mainly U.S.: transferred use of the surname, originally a local name from places in Cumbria and North Yorkshire named with Old English brycg ‘bridge’ + hām ‘homestead, settlement’. As a given name it has been adopted primarily in honour of the early Mormon leader, Brigham Young (1801–77). It is not known why he was given this name; he was the son of John and Abigail (née Howe) Young of Whitingham, Vermont.
