In part it represents a patronymic derived from the given name Bryce, in part it is an Anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic surname Ó Briosáin, an altered form of Ó Muirgheasáin ‘descendant of Muirgheasán’. The latter is a personal name perhaps derived from muir ‘sea’ + gus ‘vigour’ + the diminutive suffix -an. The Ó Muirgheasáins were hereditary poets (and keepers of the relics of St Columba) in Donegal and Scotland.
