(male) Transferred use of the surname, derived from an Old French given name of Germanic (Frankish) origin, from kol (akin to Old Norse kollir ‘helmet’) + berht ‘bright, famous’. This given name was introduced to Britain by the Normans. It survived long enough to give rise to the surname, but its use as a given name died out soon after.
