(male), (female) From a medieval vernacular form of Elias, in use as a given name in northern England from the 14th century onwards. In modern use it is often a transferred use of the surname derived from this name. In Wales it is now often taken as an Anglicized form of the Old Welsh name Elisud. It has enjoyed considerable popularity in recent times, having also been taken up as a girl's name.
