In present-day use it probably refers to the biblical ‘Garden of Eden’, crew ῾eden ‘place of pleasure’. As a boy's name it may also represent a variant of Aidan or a transferred use of a surname, itself derived in the Middle Ages from a given name Edun or Edon. This is of Old English origin, from ēad ‘prosperity, riches’ + hūn ‘bear cub’.
