as a First Name
From the Late Latin name Fabianus, a derivative of the old Roman family name Fabius, said to be a derivative of faba ‘bean’. It was borne by an early pope (236–250), who was martyred under the Emperor Decius. The name was introduced into Britain by the Normans. It occurs occasionally in the 16th and 17th centuries, but was never much used in the English-speaking world until it achieved a modest currency in the last decade of the 20th century.
