Garrison

(male) Mainly U.S.: transferred use of the surname, originally a local name from Garriston in North Yorkshire or from a patronymic for the son of a man called Garret. William Lloyd Garrison (1805–79) was a prominent American anti-slavery campaigner: the given name may originally have been bestowed in honour of him. It is now popularly associated with the American writer Garrison Keillor (b. 1942). Sometimes it is given to the sons of fathers who are called Gary or Garry.
