as a First Name
Of Celtic origin, but uncertain ultimate derivation; it first appears in French sources as Gauvain. The name is borne in the Arthurian romances by one of the knights of the Round Table (more familiar in English versions as Sir Gawain). It was still in use in the north of England as late as the early 18th century and never died out in Scotland, whence it was reintroduced to England from the early 20th century. It is now very widely used in England, Wales, and elsewhere in the English-speaking world.
