Giles

(male) Much altered English vernacular form of the Late Latin name Aegidius, from Greek Aigidios (a derivative of aigidion ‘kid, young goat’), via Old French Gide. It was the name of an 8th‐century saint who, according to tradition, was an Athenian citizen who fled to Provence because he could not cope with the fame and adulation caused by his power to work miracles, in particular by healing the lame and crippled. This was not a particularly common name in the Middle Ages and its use seems to have been confined to certain families and localities.
