as a First Name
From the Old French name Godefroy, which is of Germanic (Frankish) origin, from god ‘god’ (or gōd ‘good’) + fred, frid ‘peace’. This was adopted by the Normans, and brought to England by immigrants from the Low Countries and France. It was borne by a Norman saint (c.1066–1115) who became bishop of Amiens. There has been considerable confusion with Geoffrey.
