(male) Mainly U.S.: transferred use of the surname, which is from the Old English personal name Hereweard, a compound of here ‘army’ + weard ‘guard’, which was borne by an 11th-century thane of Lincolnshire who led resistance against the advancing Normans. The Old Norse cognate Hervarðr was also common in the north midlands of England. Use as a given name has no doubt been influenced by Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This takes its name from John Harvard (1607–38), who emigrated from London in 1637 and left half his wealth and the whole of his library to support the newly founded college.
