(male) Transferred use of the surname, which has two possible sources: either it is a reduced form of the Irish surname Keelahan, an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Céileacháin, from a diminutive of céile ‘companion’, or alternatively it is Welsh in origin, a local name from any of various townships called Cilan.
