Marley

(male) Transferred use of the surname, a local name from any of various places so called, for example in Devon, Kent, and West Yokshire. The first element of these names is respectively Old English (ge)mǣre ‘boundary’, myrig ‘pleasant’, and mearð ‘(pine) marten’. The second element in each case is lēah ‘(woodland) clearing’. Use of the surname as a given name has probably been influenced to some extent by the popularity of the Jamaican singer Bob Marley (1945–81).
