(male) Mainly North American: transferred use of the Scottish surname, which originated as a Norman baronial name borne by the lords of a place in northern France called Malleville ‘bad settlement’, i.e. settlement on infertile land. The name was taken to Scotland as early as the 12th century and became an important surname there; use as a given name seems also to have originated in Scotland.
