(male) Transferred use of the surname, originally a Norman baronial name borne by the lords of Montaigu in La Manche. The place name is from Old French mont ‘hill’ (Latin mons, genitive montis) + aigu ‘pointed’ (Latin acutus). A certain Drogo of Montaigu is known to have accompanied William the Conqueror in his invasion of England in 1066, and Montague thus became established as an aristocratic British family name.
