(male) (French) name from Late Latin Paschalis ‘relating to Easter’ (Latin Pascha, from Hebrew pesach ‘Passover’). This was taken up by the early Christians as a personal name, partly in honour of the great Christian festival, but mainly as a name for sons born at this time of the year. It was borne by two medieval popes, neither of whom achieved anything particularly notable. Its popularity may have been influenced by the fame of the French philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623–62), whose Pensées (‘Thoughts’) were published posthumously in 1670. The name is now occasionally used in the English-speaking world, mainly by Roman Catholics.
