(male) Transferred use of the surname, in origin a local name from a place in Hertfordshire, named as the ‘settlement of Royce’. The latter is an obsolete variant of Rohesia (see Rose). Royston is now widely used as a given name, especially among West Indians, although the reasons for its popularity in that community are not known.
