Muslim: from a personal name based on Arabic rashīd ‘wise’, ‘judicious’, ‘rightly guided’, ‘right-minded’. Al-Rashīd ‘the Right-Minded’ is an epithet of Allah (see the Qur’an 11:87). Rashīd is used in combination with other words, e.g. ῾Abd ur-Rashīd ‘servant of the Right-Minded’. Hārūn ur-Rashīd (786–809) was the most famous of the Abbasid khalifs. This name is widespread throughout the Muslim world.
