Chinese 邵: from an altered form of the place name Zhao. Zhao Gongshi was the senior statesman of the Zhou under four successive kings; he played an important role in administration of the kingdom and the establishment of the Zhou dynasty (1122–221 BC). He was granted the area of Zhao (召); his descendants added to the character for Zhao a component which meant city or county, thus creating the character for Shao, 邵, which they adopted as their surname.
