South German: altered spelling of Stempfli, a metonymic occupational name for someone who worked at a crushing mill, from a diminutive of Middle High German stampf ‘pestle’, ‘crusher’, ‘crushing mill’. In some instances it may have been applied as a nickname for a small, fat person.
