Japanese: ‘bamboo rice paddy’, also written with characters meaning ‘warrior rice paddy’. The most famous Takeda family was descended from Minamoto Yoshimitsu (1056–1127) and ruled several provinces, most notably Kai (present-day Yamanashi prefecture). Other families, such as Ogasawara, Akiyama, Matsumae, Nishina, and Iwasaki, are of Takeda descent. An alternate pronunciation is Taketa. It is listed in the Shinsen shōjiroku.
