Most probably English: habitational name from places in Hertfordshire and Surrey named Wormley, from Old English wyrm ‘snake’ + lēah ‘(woodland) clearing’. There is, however, a suggestion that the family may be of Dutch origin and that this may be an altered form of an unidentified Dutch name.
