Polish and Jewish (from Poland): nickname for a troublesome or troubled person, from Polish zawada ‘problem’, ‘obstacle’. In some cases it may be a topographic name for someone who lived by a physical obstruction or a habitational name from a place called Zawada, named with this word (see Zawadzki).
